CRIME & PUNISHMENT
Crime & Punishment is, and has been, a part of human behaviour for thousands of years.
We have a huge collection of period instruments, from Victorian finger boards to full size guillotine, branding irons, gallows, Thumbscrews, Pillory, Stocks and many more.
The fine line between punishment and torture is examined, we re-enact a Courtroom trial of the past with students playing the key roles, Judge, Jury, Defendant, Presecution, Clerks and a Public gallery. This is linked to the ‘Bloody Code’ of the 18th Century, where over 200 crimes carried the death penalty in Great Britain.
We look back at some of the ghastly executions of the past, including the Crucifixion, Hanging, Drawing & Quartering, Burning at the Stake, Witch Trials, and more.
A very thought-provoking session indeed.
